Follow a healthy diet and maintain a healthy weight

Consuming a healthy diet is important for cardiovascular health and stroke prevention. Selecting healthy foods and consuming appropriate amounts can positively affect risk factors for recurrent stroke. Dietary recommendations have been advised by several studies, and are consistent with DASH and Mediterranean-style dietary patterns, which are effective in reducing the risk of stroke.
The recommendations encourage the intake of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy products, poultry, fish, legumes, vegetable oils, and nuts; limited consumption of sweets, sweetened-beverages, and red meats; and reduced sodium intake.
